Hello, today we’re going to talk about the characteristics and behaviors of older adults with dementia. Dementia causes a variety of behavioral changes due to declines in memory and cognitive function, and we’ll also discuss how to understand and cope with them.
1.repetitive speaking
People with dementia often repeat the same thing several times. For example, they might say, “Isn’t it nice out today?” and then ask the same question again a few minutes later.

- What to do: Be patient and listen. When you respond, be gentle and respectful of their feelings.
2.not finding things easily
They often have trouble finding things that are right in front of them – for example, they can’t find their glasses or wallet and panic.

- What to do: Put things in a designated place and let them know where it is. Reassure them that you’ll be there to find it if they need you.
3. Plugged into a specific topic
When you get stuck on a topic, you can talk about it all day long. For example, you might tell stories from your childhood over and over again.

- What to do: Listen to their story and empathize with them. Try to understand their feelings through conversation, and transition to other topics naturally.
4. Organizing behaviors
We often throw things out every day to organize our clothes, bags, etc. This can be a behavior that comes from anxiety or disorganization.

- What to do: Help them get organized, and once they’re done, praise the results together. It’s important to give them a sense of security.
5. Sunset Syndrome
Anxiety or confusion often increases around dusk, when they may exhibit depressed or suspicious behavior.

- What to do: During this time, it’s good to be present, do your favorite activities together, and provide comfort. Going for a walk or listening to music can also help.
Understanding the behaviors of people with dementia and how to respond to them can help you communicate and care for them better. Be there with constant reassurance, compassion, and patience.
